Every homeowner knows that eventually, their roof will need to be replaced. The question is when. With the average lifespan of a roof being about 20 years, according to BCC Research, you'll likely have to deal with this sooner or later. And while we all know that replacing a roof can lead to some major stress and frustration for homeowners, there are steps that can be taken to reduce the number of high-strung moments these projects usually entail.

1. Plan Ahead

One of the most important things you can do when it comes time to replace your roof is to plan ahead. Start by researching different roofing contractors in your area and getting quotes from them. Once you've narrowed down your choices, be sure to ask the roof installer plenty of questions about the process, so you know what to expect.

Another good way to plan is by removing anything that could pose a potential hazard if it's struck by falling debris, like gardening tools, patio furniture, and children's toys. This includes window boxes and planter units, which are usually placed close to the roof.

2. Hire an Experienced Roof Installer

When you're looking for a roofing contractor, be sure to ask for recommendations from friends and family members who have had their roofs replaced. If you're not having much luck with a personal recommendation, many home improvement websites like HomeAdvisor will allow homeowners to check the reviews of contractors to find someone reliable.

3. Remove Antennas and Other Obstructions

If you have any antennas or satellite dishes on your roof, be sure to remove them before the contractor arrives. Also, anything that could fall off the roof during installation needs to be removed. For example, if you have a tree with low-hanging branches, the branches should be cut back before work begins.

4. Make Plans for Your Pets

If you have pets, be sure to make arrangements for them before the roof installer arrives. Pets can often become agitated and stressed when there is a lot of noise and activity, so it's best to keep them somewhere else until the work is completed.

5. Remove Wall Hangings and Mirrors

Wall hangings and mirrors should also be removed before the roofers arrive. The vibrations and hammering from the installation process can often cause these items to fall and break.

A stress-free roof replacement begins with a little planning and preparation on the homeowner's part. By following these five tips, you can minimize the headaches and potential stressors that often come with this type of home improvement project.
